#5. The Great Beam Debate
From Rustic to Refined
In their original rustic setting,
those rough-sawn beams added undeniable character and charm to our great room. However, as our vision shifted toward an organic modern aesthetic— balancing natural elements with sleek, clean lines—it became clear that th beams were at odds with the new style we were creating. After some deliberation, we decided to cover them with a smooth drywall finish. The result? A room that feels more like “us”—cohesive, minimalistic, and just right.
To Cover or Not to Cover?
Deciding to cover the beams wasn’t something we took lightly. We considered leaving them as they were, but their rough texture didn’t fit with the organic modern vibe we were aiming for. Our home’s spacious rooms are a blessing, but they also present a challenge. Creating a space that feels both warm and inviting while maintaining openness isn’t easy. Ultimately, a smooth, uniform finish that blends seamlessly with the walls was the best choice to achieve the
refined and balanced atmosphere we desired.
Flooring and Layout Considerations
Changing the fireplace meant rethinking the flooring. The old flooring was still in decent shape, but it didn’t fit the new look we were going for. We were drawn to natural materials that not only looked great but could also handle the daily wear and tear of a busy household. Our two Golden Retrievers played a big part in our decisions. We needed flooring that could stand up to their fun, including frequent burn-outs to the door when deliveries arrived. This kind of wear can often cause more damage than a busy home with kids. We ruled out tile because it’s hard to keep the grout clean, and instead chose beautiful hardwood that added warmth and continuity throughout the space.

The pony wall and heavier
furnishings made the room
feel enclosed. It had charm,
but we knew it was time to
open up and embrace a
modern look.
The (Not-So) Smooth Journey
Covering the beams went smoothly until we reached the stair opening. Where do you put a ladder when there’s nothing but air beneath you? Our solution: a makeshift platform nailed into the wall. It wasn’t the most elegant approach, but it worked and added a touch of DIY adventure to our remodel.

ARoom Transformed
Covering the beams with drywall gave the room a fresh, open feel—like trading in old jeans for a new pair that fits just right. The space now has a more streamlined, minimalistic look that ties everything together. We may have lost a bit of the rustic character, but the new vibe is exactly what we were going for: a cohesive, organic modern space that complements our home’s
spacious layout.
One of the most surprising outcomes has been the effect on our home’s natural flow. Before, when people came over, it often took them a while to notice the beautiful views outside. The heavy beams and equally heavy furnishings seemed to stop the eye, keeping the focus inside. But now, with the beams covered and the room’s interior lightened up, your gaze is naturally drawn straight to the windows and the views beyond. This lighter, more cohesive design has brought a newfound openness, connecting the indoors with the outdoors.

The transformation—the open, airy design
now draws your eyes to the tranquil views

Before and After: From Rustic to Organic Modern
Looking at the before and after photos, it’s hard to believe it’s the same room. The new smooth finish makes the space feel more open and cohesive, allowing the rest of the room to really shine. It’s a change that brought out the best in the space and made it feel like home.
What’s Next?
With the beams covered and the room feeling more expansive, our next project is replacing the pony wall with minimalistic iron railings. This change will further open up our living space, adding a modern touch and enhancing the airy feel we’re aiming for. We can’t wait to see how this next step unfolds—stay tuned!
